Mammogram, Ultrasound, or MRI

Three methods, three strengths. When each one is the right choice.

In breast imaging, three methods complement one another. Each has its own strength.

A mammogram is an X-ray exam and the most important method for early detection. It can reveal even the tiniest calcifications and changes, often before anything can be felt. With dense tissue, its accuracy is more limited.

Ultrasound works without radiation and is well suited to assessing lumps and telling fluid-filled cysts apart from solid lumps. It is often used as an add-on, especially with dense tissue and in younger women.

Breast MRI is the most sensitive method. It is used mainly when there is an increased or inherited risk, with unclear findings, and in special situations. Living with increased risk

Which method makes sense and when is something your doctor decides based on your age, breast density, risk, and the question at hand.
