When chemotherapy is used and how it works.
Chemotherapy works throughout the whole body. It targets cells that divide quickly, which means it can also reach individual tumor cells that have already broken away. It is used depending on the tumor biology and stage, sometimes before surgery to shrink a tumor, sometimes afterward.
Not every woman needs chemotherapy. For hormone receptor positive, slow growing tumors, it can often be skipped. For more aggressive subtypes like triple negative, on the other hand, it is an important building block. Tumor subtypes
